A Teenage Photo Shoot can enhance the confidence of your teen.
This week is National Children’s Mental Health Week and this year the theme is #BeingOurselves. As parents, we are all very aware of the importance of our children’s mental health. And, it is something I have taken special interest in of late while raising my two teenage boys and becoming acquainted with the issues they face.
One of these issues lies in our increasingly visual digital world where our children are constantly on social media. They are bombarded with images of ‘perfect’ people with ‘perfect’ lives. As a result, they feel a need to be ‘perfect’ too. Which can contribute to the development of self esteem issues by their teenage years.
It is unrealistic to prevent most teenagers from engaging with social media sites. However, we can help give them to feel good about themselves and to put their best foot forward in the digital world. My teenage photo shoot is my way of helping work towards this.
As a portrait photographer, my contribution to enhancing the self esteem of teens I know is to spend time with them. To involve teenagers in my work by spending a day teaching them a little bit about photography. We go over some of the technical aspects of using a proper camera and discussing lighting. And finally, we do a creative shoot using the teen as the model. Even when the teenager is camera shy, they make wonderful subjects with their youthful vitality and that amazing young skin. By establishing a good rapport with them and using a little creativity, we get excellent shots.
We take naturalistic photographs, often out of doors. Where I capture the young person looking wonderful while engaging in a hobby or just ‘being themselves’. My teenage subjects find this both fun and confidence-building and rave about the results.
This is what one of my teens had to say about her teenage photo shoot:
“I found that the experience was very empowering and incredibly enjoyable! What I loved about my shoot with Serena was the the laid back, calm and fun approach she took, this made me more comfortable during the shoot. When seeing the end results I am very pleased to say that both Serena and myself were very proud of the photographs. I could not recommend Serena enough! Her warm and kind personality put me at ease straight away!”
Is there is a teen in your life who could use a boost with a teenage photo shoot? Or, if you would simply like to treat your son, daughter, godchild, niece or nephew to a confidence-building, creative learning experience, email me or ring me on 07958 511 819.
