Capturing Children and Teens doing what they love most in a portrait photoshoot makes it special
I photograph many Children and Teens in my portrait photoshoots. And I find that one of the best ways to get cooperation and an excellent result, is to engage them in doing something they love. I find that the passion for the activity shows in my portraits. And it also gives a more complete picture of the individual and what they are all about. Which, let’s face it, is the point of a portrait photoshoot.
Its not a question of using props or being contrived. My style is natural and spontaneous. But introducing an object or activity they love into the shoot is a great tool to engage my subject and get them to relax and feel happy which helps me to get a great shot.
Sometimes it is as simple as taking a football to the park for a little boy to kick. Or getting a chlid to play with their favourite toy. Or walking the family dog. Sometimes it is capturing the sitter playing an instrument or even riding a horse. But the resulting image says so much about who that person is, right now.
Below you will find a few examples of what I mean.
