Outdoor portrait photography in london

Why outdoor portrait photography is so fabulous.

While I may have a studio in West London, I prefer to shoot outdoors when possible. Outdoor portrait photography is a bit of a passion for me. I think this is largely because what nature provides is not only visually beautiful on its own. But also because it acts as a fantastic backdrop to portraits. Texture, vibrancy and pattern all combine to make wonderful background to my subject and give extra visual interest and impact without competing with the subject.

It’s actually more challenging photographing outdoors, but I love shooting in natural light. Also, people seem more natural and free and relaxed when outdoors. Especially when compared with studio portraits which can make people feel a bit stiff at first.

As I continue to develop and mature as a portrait photographer, I find themes coming out in my work. I see nature as a source of abundance, possibility, growth, and groundedness. And, I love using nature as metaphor, such as flowers for abundance and oak trees for wisdom.

We may live in a large city, but there is natural beauty all around us in London’s parks. And for my outdoor portrait photography, I take advantage of this at every opportunity.

For example the image below was taken in Richmond Park, Southwest London.

And this family shoot as well, where the children had fun climbing the trees and posing.

And with my personal branding photoshoots, I am able to give a more interesting background to my subject while telling their story. The example below is from a photoshoot in Kensington Gardens.

And my personal favourite for using natural backdrops is in my Quintessential Woman photoshoots. This is where I take portraits of women in beautiful clothes, outdoors amongst nature. Such as this one undertaken in Holland Park.

And this natural background only improves as we get out of London.

If fact, in writing this blog I realise how many of my photoshoots are outdoor portrait shoots. Here you can see examples of how I use nature in my Quintessential Woman photoshoots. And in my Personal Branding photoshoots.
