Why I love outdoor portrait photoshoots

Summer is here so let’s get outside for a portrait photoshoot

I love to shoot outside in my work. It’s more challenging for a portrait photographer to shoot on location without the benefit of being able to control the light and conditions but I prefer the challenge and the results. Outdoors, you can find interesting textured backdrops such as old barns and fences. Or arches and doorways. And when I have a family photoshoot, I enjoy finding a tree for the children to climb or branches to sit on. But my absolute favourite thing is flowers. To shoot a beautiful girl or woman amongst some stunning roses or cherry blossom is heaven. Or, in autumn when the flowers are asleep, I use leaves for my backdrops. Nothing beats the great outdoors as a background for a portrait photoshoot.

Nature or the built environment provides the colour and texture. And I provide the artistry. My expertise combined with the connection with my client gives me all I need to get a good portrait. Not fancy lighting or controlled conditions. The spontaneity and fun and freedom that come with being outside positively impacts both photographer and subject. And creates unique images, so varied from the traditional studio portrait photoshoot.
