TEEN PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

SERENA FILLED ME WITH CONFIDENCE DURING MY TEEN PORTAIT PHOTOSHOOT AND REALLY MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE AND AT EASE. WE GOT SOME GREAT SHOTS

Having two young adult sons, teenage portrait photography is close to my heart. Luckily being a professional photographer, I have a good record of these years.

The teenage years are a time of immense change. Some teens glide through with ease while others find these years challenging and have problems with self-confidence. In the world of global celebrities, Instagram, Facebook and selfies with filters, teens are constantly exposed to images of physical perfection and not all feel that they match up.

Sadly, few teenagers seem aware of the inherent beauty of their youth. Many suffer self-esteem issues or at best, moments of terrible insecurity.

My teenage photography subjects have told me that their portrait shoot and resulting images surprised and delighted them, giving them confidence in their journey towards adulthood.

That’s why I offer teen portrait shoots, a bit like an American ‘Senior Portrait Shoot‘. (Our friends in the U.S. celebrate their teenagers as they near the end of their schooling with a Senior Portrait shoot. Why not follow their lead?)

Often, I photograph teens initially in their everyday jeans and then we often glam up in whatever makes them feel stylish and fabulous. It’s like a fashion photoshoot and teens love it and it makes them feel fantastic.

It’s the perfect time to capture some stunning and fabulous portraits in a young person’s life. (And give them some wonderful, professional content for their social media feeds…). These will be created for display in beautiful prints, to have on your walls as art, and in albums to treasure forever.

Why don’t you celebrate the teen in your life with a professional teenage portrait photoshoot. It makes a wonderful gift for an 18th birthday or other special occasion. And if your teen is an aspiring model, musician, etc. why not book them a personal branding shoot?

If you want to celebrate this fleeting time in the life of your teen, I offer Teen Portrait Photography undertaken at the West London Studio and on location.

FAQs

WHY SHOULD I BOOK A PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT PHOTOSHOOT FOR MY TEEN?

While teens are taking endless selfies to put on Snapchat, Instagram etc, parents rarely get to see them! So if you want to have beautiful portraits of your teenagers during this time of intense development from child to young adult, you had better take control of the portraits. Also they are perfect gifts for grandparents who most likely aren’t seeing much of their grandchildren right now.

In addition, a professional Teen portrait shoot should make your teenager feel fantastic, confident and positive. It can boost self-esteem and give them confidence in their looks. It can really help to show them what others see.

Also, many creative young people want pictures of them perusing their chosen passion/profession of singer, actor, dancer, etc. It’s never too early for them to take control of their digital identity and their personal brand.

HOW DO YOU ENGAGE TEENS FOR A TEEN PORTRAIT SHOOT?

Point out to them that they will have fantastic portraits for social media taken by a professional portrait photographer. Also encourage them to create a mood board on Pintrest and get involved in the planning.

Teens will feel more relaxed in front of the camera if they are kept moving. Put on music of their choice, chat to them, engage with them and put them at their ease. Have them show you their best ‘blue steel’ pose. It should get them laughing and that’s when you will get your best shots.

Clear the room (or engage parents in doing some other task, if they are around). Many teens are super self-conscious and won’t want to ‘perform’ or be able to relax in front of their families AND the camera.

Finally, capture your teen portrait subject doing something they love. Singing, dancing, playing an instrument, listening to music, playing a sport, chilling with a family pet. It will make them feel happy and that will come through in the photos and help them feel at ease.

WHAT IS BETTER FOR TEENAGE PORTRAIT SHOOTS? STUDIO OR LOCATION PHOTOSHOOT?

Studio shots are made in a ‘safe’ environment. Not just for the photographer, where it means control over the light and access to backdrops etc. But for the teen who may feel less inhibited inside a (nearly) empty studio with music playing. It can feel more intimate and secure and will allow you to get fantastic headshots and a allows changes of clothes and accessories.

However, there is something amazing about getting outside in nature. It can really bring out the uninhibited, childlike part of your teenager. Teens can be really relaxed and made less self-conscious by having them climb trees, stand on benches, play in autumn leaves, play peek a boo with flowers, etc. Celebrating their youth and beauty in nature just makes sense. And the results are beautiful.
